Aims/objetivos

Students should:

  •   Understand the concept of balanced diet.
  •  Describe a balanced diet related to age and sex of an individual; the effects of malnutrition in relation to starvation, coronary heart disease, constipation and obesity; the effects of alcohol and the dangers of its misuse.
  •  List the principal sources of, and describe the importance of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins (C and D only), Mineral salts (Calcium and Iron only), fiber and water.
  •  Describe the symptoms of deficiency of Vitamins and Minerals vitamins (C and D only, Calcium and Iron only).
  •  Discuss the problems of food supplies in the world and the problems which contribute to famine), unequal distribution of food, increasing population, etc.).
  •  Describe the use of microorganisms in the food industry, with reference to yogurt, bread and single cell protein.

Content/contenido

Diet. Discuss what diet is, what a balance diet contains and how it can be improved.
Summative task / evaluación final

Exam to demonstrate and apply acquired knowledge.
Lab reports, Essay on Nutrition and Health.
