Aims/objetivos
The student will be able to
Describe the general physical and chemical properties of metals.
Describe the structure of an alloy and explain why metals are often used as alloys.
Relate the properties of metals to their structure.
Desing and perform experiments to place the metals in an order of reactivity: action of water and steam, with acids, reaction of the oxides with carbon or other metals, and displacement in solution.
Describe the extraction of iron in the blast furnace and its conversion to steel.
Write the relevant word and balanced equations.
State the uses of mild steel and stainless steel, zinc ( galvanising and brass) copper in wiring and cooking utensils and architecture.
Be able to relate specifics properties of the metals to their different uses.
Link date of discovery to ease of extraction and stability of compounds.
Describe rusting of iron and its prevention.
