Aims/objetivos

The student will be able to

  •   Describe the general physical and chemical properties of metals.
  •  Describe the structure of an alloy and explain why metals are often used as alloys.
  •  Relate the properties of metals to their structure.
  •  Desing and perform experiments to place the metals in an order of reactivity: action of water and steam, with acids, reaction of the oxides with carbon or other metals, and displacement in solution.
  •  Describe the extraction of iron in the blast furnace and its conversion to steel.
  •  Write the relevant word and balanced equations.
  •  State the uses of mild steel and stainless steel, zinc ( galvanising and brass) copper in wiring and cooking utensils and architecture.
  •  Be able to relate specifics properties of the metals to their different uses.
  •  Link date of discovery to ease of extraction and stability of compounds.
  •  Describe rusting of iron and its prevention.
